“A life of their own ISBN: 978-0-9551224-3-9 grouped nine sculptors, each of whom offers alternative proposals as to what sculpture might be. The book is printed onto three two-sided sheets, each with distinct surfaces: off-white uncoated & high-white gloss, semi-coated & uncoated, smooth white uncoated & off-white uncoated. The sheets are wrapped around each other to form signatures in which consecutive pages have different surfaces. The sequence is then repeated. Despite the relative simplicity of the mechanism, the result is a constantly varying surface. The deformed cover-lettering is blind-embossed, pressed through the gloss underside and into the uncoated outer page. Without hard covers, the thread-sewn and glued edge of the bookblock is left exposed. At the For edge, the sheets are trimmed to three widths, thus page-turning is made awkward causing the reader to notice the act. The book draws attention to its physical or sculptural characteristics, requiring manipulation or even operation.
