At the end of the last century I invested in a Roland VS-1680 Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) and spent two years figuring out how to use it to write and record an album. The resulting eponymous ‘Hard sleeper’ album was released in 2000 by Emigré Music, the offshoot label of seminal design magazine Emigré. The album received some pretty nice reviews at the time (see here). I am thrilled to say that a limited-edition Emigré re-issue of this album is now available!
The reissue comes with new cover art featuring two colour photographs from a trip to China in 1999 shot on 35mm film, and the Rudy VanderLans/Zuzana Licko font Oblong (with Oakland Ten used for the title). Messages sonores is an on-going project directed by Peter Maybury, collecting recordings from specific locations and various travels – sounds from the street, birds, footsteps or domestic sounds – conversation, pouring water, sweeping the floor. These sounds are collated using simple editing techniques and sequenced/composed to suggest movement through space and the passing of time.
The CDs are generally distributed free of charge through various outlets including record store, and include with them an invitation to participate in the project. Participants are loaned an audio-recorder to use over a one week period. Peter then edits and compiles these recordings, and produces an edition of CDs for further distribution. 6 editions have been produced to date.
