“Visiting the cave of Dunmore can be an underwhelming experience. It’s a pleasant enough excursion but it can be difficult to gain a sense of where you are. The cave was originally a hole in the ground. Now it is a transition through glass doors, steps clad in various stones for illustrative purpose, a timber and steel canopy and illuminated concrete steps. There is no threshold.
At the admissions desk the visitor is issued a page photocopied from the The Dublin Penny Journal of 1832. It provides a vivid account of a visit, the cave formation, its incredible darkness and the human remains once discovered. Within the text there is room to imagine.
No steps, no light. You cross a threshold.”
Written and designed by Peter, Make ready is not a scholarly work. Part manifesto, part process journal, it gathers recollections and observations on the making of work and how we experience our often heavily mediated environment.
